We look forward to seeing you in May. • From Your PresidentDear Members: The SDP Board of Directors, staff and Membership Task Force would like to thank everyone who took our recent survey about Membership. Each and every answer and comment will be studied and taken into consideration as we plan for the future. The goal of the survey was to find positive ways to move SDP forward and to grow as an organization. We need to explore the membership's willingness to stretch and grow as members and chapters, and to embrace a new generation of decorative painters. We need to know in what ways our members want to move forward and grow. We cannot plan for the future without asking our members for input. And we are so grateful your responses! There are many painters out there, beginners as well as experienced ones. We need to make SDP known to them, and we need to take action to make SDP an even more appealing organization that they want to join and will be proud to be a part of. I know there were many complaints about the survey's lack of comment space. The survey is electronically compiled, which makes it difficult to insert comments. Remember you can always send your comments to SDP and/or me. No current plans for major changes are in place, but we need to pick up the challenge of increasing our membership. It is every single member's job to make us bigger and better. Again, thank you for responding to the survey and making your voice heard. • We Need You!It takes a lot of people to make SDP Conference a success each year. We need you to help make SDP Conference a rousing success. Even if you only have an hour or two to give, your time will make a difference. Here are some of our volunteer opportunities:
Volunteers do not have to be SDP members (except for election tellers). If you live near Wichita, maybe that friend who you’ve been trying to get to join your chapter would like the chance to see what it is all about before committing. Being a volunteer for a morning or afternoon might just give her the taste she needs to make that decision to get involved. If you’re traveling to Conference with friends or family remember that non-painting mates and friends make awesome volunteers, too. Not only will volunteers receive the appreciation of the Society and satisfaction that comes from helping, but also a limited edition charm. The names of those volunteers who put in at least five hours will be entered in a drawing for original painted pieces created and provided by members of Decorative Arts Business Alliance. Apple Valley Painters are supporting U.S. armed forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards on which to write home on. The card shown above was designed and taught by our member Barb Noel to chapter members at our January 2011 paint-in.
You might ask, “What is Operation Write Home?” It is a merry band of thousands of card makers made up of Americans—and citizens of other nations too—who care about our military, and want to support them with creativity and encouragement. Crafters and artists of all ages and levels of experience have participated since 2007... and are on the way to a landmark one million cards!
Care packages filled with hundreds of handmade cards are sent to service personnel. Each box is packed with great care, alternating styles and colors, creating "eye candy" for heroes who are usually surrounded only with khaki. It presents soldiers with an opportunity to have a card on which to write home to friends and family. The topper on each box is a plastic bag filled with twenty to thirty letters from adults and children across the country, letters handed out especially to those in need of a positive word from the home front.

We're always asking Penn’s Woods Painters members to paint, paint, paint for fundraisers so in 2010 we decided to incorporate two easy fundraisers.
In May we invited a representative from Tastefully Simply to put up a table at our chapter meeting and give us a sampling of her products. We then had an "online party" taking orders from that meeting until the July meeting. Without having to hardly lift a finger, we made just over $200 plus earned $150 worth of product which we will include in one of our meeting raffles.
This month we're having an equally easy fundraiser. We made arrangements with a local restaurant. We give out cards to family and friends inviting them to have lunch or dinner on a specific date. They go to dinner at the restaurant on that date and simply hand the waitress the card and we receive 25% of the total bill. Again -- we hardly have to lift a finger! |

Brush and Brag, the San Angelo, Texas, chapter of SDP, participated in Christmas at Old Fort Concho in San Angelo. This event is the historic fort's annual celebration of the season, featuring many living history re-enactors, artillery and cavalry demonstrations, historical exhibits, demonstrations, live music, and shopping.
The chapter submitted a design by member Sara Hasty for a uniformed Santa bell ornament to be sold at the annual event as the 2010 official commemorative ornament. The design was accepted, and under Sara's direction, Brush and Brag members painted 325 soldier Santa bell ornaments for the event. The bells were painted on cardboard yarn spools donated by Ingrid Custom Hand Woven Rugs, an historic wool mill in nearby Paint Rock, Texas. The ornament sold out during the event, and served as a fundraiser for both Brush and Brag and Fort Concho. Fort Concho Executive Director Bob Bluthardt estimated between 15,000 and 17,000 people participated in the event this year.
Fort Concho board members were so pleased with the quality of the ornaments that they invited Brush and Brag to exhibit their work during the event. Members brought a variety of items from their personal collections to exhibit in the Visitors Center at the Fort during the three day event, and also staffed the exhibit to answer questions and hand out brochures about the chapter. Several Fort Concho board members visited the exhibit, encouraging members to submit a design for 2011 as well. During the exhibit, Brush and Brag was also able to display information regarding the chapter's seminars scheduled for 2011 as well as an assortment of birdhouses the club painted for another community service project. For that project, a number of members painted birdhouses to decorate a new community garden being established as the "People Plant Connection Garden."
